Colored American Magazine Launched, Publishing Black Literature and Culture

The Colored American Magazine launched in Boston in May 1900, the first major Black-owned literary and cultural magazine in America. It published fiction, poetry, essays, and biographical sketches by Black writers including Pauline Hopkins, its most important editor and contributor. The magazine provided a rare national platform for Black literary voices at a moment when the mainstream press systematically excluded Black writers.
