Denmark Vesey Purchases His Freedom with Lottery Winnings

Denmark Vesey won $1,500 in a street lottery in Charleston, South Carolina, and used the prize to purchase his freedom from enslavement. He went on to become a prosperous carpenter and community leader, and would later organize one of the largest planned slave rebellions in American history in 1822.
