Edward Mitchell Bannister Wins First Prize at Philadelphia Centennial Exposition

Providence-based painter Edward Mitchell Bannister won the bronze medal for landscape painting at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition — the first Black artist to receive a major national art prize in the United States. His win was contested by judges who were surprised by his race, but fellow exhibitors rallied to uphold it.
