Edward Mitchell Bannister Wins Bronze Medal at 1876 Centennial Exposition

Providence painter Edward Mitchell Bannister wins the bronze medal at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition for his landscape 'Under the Oaks.' When organizers initially refused to believe a Black artist had won, fellow competitors vouched for him and insisted the medal stand. Bannister later co-founded the Providence Art Club, which became the Rhode Island School of Design.
