Edward Bouchet Earns First PhD by a Black American

Edward Bouchet became the first Black American to earn a PhD in the United States, completing his doctorate in physics at Yale University. He was only the sixth person of any race to earn a physics PhD in the US. Despite his credentials, he was barred from research universities and spent his career teaching at the Institute for Colored Youth in Philadelphia.
