Edward Bouchet Earns First PhD from an American University Awarded to a Black Person

Edward Alexander Bouchet received a PhD in physics from Yale University in 1876, becoming the first African American to earn a doctorate from an American institution and only the sixth person in the U.S. to receive a physics PhD. Despite his brilliance, racism barred him from research universities; he taught at Philadelphia's Institute for Colored Youth.
