"Black Swan" Elizabeth Greenfield Performs for Queen Victoria
Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield, called the "Black Swan" for her extraordinary vocal range of 27 notes, performed a command concert for Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace during her 1853 European tour. Born enslaved in Mississippi, she became the first African American concert singer to achieve transatlantic fame, performing operatic selections at a time when Black artists were barred from most American stages.
