Eugene Bullard Becomes First Black American Military Pilot

Eugene Jacques Bullard, born in Columbus, Georgia, became the first Black American military aviator when he earned his pilot's license in France and flew combat missions with the French Air Service during World War I. Rejected by the US Army Air Service due to his race, Bullard flew for France and was decorated for valor.
