Truman's Executive Order 9981 desegregates the US military
President Harry S. Truman signed Executive Order 9981, mandating equality of treatment and opportunity in the US armed forces regardless of race, color, religion, or national origin. The order effectively desegregated the military and was a major milestone in the civil rights movement, achieved in part through pressure from Black activists including A. Philip Randolph.
