Faith Ringgold creates Tar Beach story quilt

Faith Ringgold completed Tar Beach, her most celebrated story quilt combining painted imagery, narrative text, and the African American quilting tradition to depict a Harlem girl's dreams of flying over New York City. Later adapted into an award-winning children's book, the work exemplifies Ringgold's pioneering fusion of feminist politics, Black cultural heritage, and visual art. She was among the first artists to gain recognition for quilt-making as a serious fine art form.
