Philadelphia Female Literary Association Founded
Black women in Philadelphia founded the Female Literary Association in 1831, one of the earliest literary societies for African American women in the United States. Members met weekly to compose and critique essays, poems, and other writings, cultivating Black women's intellectual life at a time when they were doubly excluded from formal education by race and gender. The association was part of a broader network of Black self-improvement organizations and fed directly into abolitionist activism.
