Frances Harper Publishes Iola Leroy

Frances Ellen Watkins Harper published Iola Leroy, or Shadows Uplifted in 1892, one of the first novels by an African American woman published in the United States. The novel depicted Reconstruction-era Black life with dignity and ambition and argued powerfully for women's rights and racial uplift, cementing Harper's legacy as a literary and activist pioneer.
