Frances Ellen Watkins Harper Publishes Poems on Miscellaneous Subjects
Frances Ellen Watkins Harper's debut poetry collection sold 10,000 copies in four years — a remarkable achievement for any American poet of the era and an extraordinary one for a Black woman. The collection addressed slavery, temperance, and women's rights. Harper simultaneously toured as an abolitionist speaker, becoming one of the most prominent African American voices before the Civil War.
