Frederick Douglass Appointed U.S. Minister to Haiti

President Benjamin Harrison appointed Frederick Douglass as U.S. Minister Resident and Consul General to Haiti in 1889 — the most senior diplomatic post held by a Black American to that time. Douglass served until 1891 and later represented Haiti at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, championing Haitian sovereignty and dignity.
