Freedman's Savings and Trust Company Opens, Pioneering Black Banking
Congress charters the Freedman's Savings and Trust Company to serve formerly enslaved people. At its peak it held deposits from 70,000 Black Americans totaling nearly $3 million. Though it collapsed in 1874 due to white mismanagement, its existence demonstrated Black Americans' desire for economic participation.
