Freedmen's Bureau Established
Congress established the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands on March 3, 1865. It operated over 900 schools, issued food rations to four million freedpeople, adjudicated labor disputes, and attempted land redistribution. Despite chronic underfunding and President Johnson's hostility, the Bureau educated an estimated 150,000 Black Americans before Congress defunded it in 1872.
