Freedmen's Bureau Establishes Thousands of Schools Across the South

The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands establishes over 4,000 schools across the South by 1870, educating more than 250,000 formerly enslaved people. Black communities contribute labor, land, and resources alongside Bureau funding, laying the educational infrastructure for generations of Black achievement.
