Freedom's Journal Founded as First Black-Owned Newspaper in the US

Samuel Cornish and John Russwurm launched Freedom's Journal in New York City, the first newspaper in the United States owned and operated by Black Americans. Its motto — 'We wish to plead our own cause' — declared editorial independence from white abolitionist papers and gave Black voices direct access to print.
