Garrett Morgan patents the safety hood and gas mask

Cleveland inventor Garrett Morgan received a patent for a smoke-protection hood that became the basis for the modern gas mask, famously used to rescue workers trapped in a Lake Erie tunnel explosion in 1916. He also invented the three-position traffic signal, transforming urban street safety.
