Gloria Naylor wins National Book Award for The Women of Brewster Place

Naylor's debut novel, tracing the lives of seven Black women in a dead-end urban street, won the National Book Award for First Novel and was later adapted into a television miniseries. It extended the tradition of Black women's communal narrative established by Hurston and helped define the renaissance of Black women's literature in the 1980s.
