Granville Woods Patents Electromechanical Brake System

In 1889, Granville Woods patented an improved electric motor and a system for distributing electricity to streetcars through an overhead wire, a technology foundational to urban transit systems. He eventually secured over 50 patents in his lifetime. His third-rail and overhead power systems were adopted by the electric railway industry across the United States.
