Granville Woods Patents Third-Rail Power System for Electric Transit

Granville Woods patented in 1889 a system for distributing electricity to streetcars through overhead wires and a third rail, foundational technology for urban transit systems. His electric motor improvements were adopted by the electric railway industry. He eventually secured over 50 patents during his lifetime.
