Henry Ossawa Tanner Paints 'The Thankful Poor'

Tanner completes 'The Thankful Poor,' depicting an elderly Black man and young boy saying grace before a humble meal. Bathed in warm, reverent light, the painting extends his mission of portraying Black Americans with humanity and spiritual depth. Tanner subsequently relocated to Paris, where he won the French Salon medal and international acclaim.
