Howard University Medical School Trains Black Physicians During Jim Crow

Howard University Medical School, founded in 1868 in Washington, D.C., trained the majority of Black physicians in the United States during the late 19th century. By 1900 it had graduated hundreds of Black doctors who served communities almost entirely without access to white medical care. With Meharry Medical College (founded 1876), Howard produced over 90 percent of all Black doctors in America.
