Institute for Colored Youth Founded in Philadelphia

Quaker philanthropist Richard Humphreys left funds in 1832 to found the Institute for Colored Youth in Philadelphia, which opened in 1837. It became one of the most rigorous Black academic institutions of the nineteenth century, later evolving into Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, the oldest historically Black university in the United States.
