Isaac Murphy Wins Three Kentucky Derbies

Isaac Murphy became the first jockey to win three Kentucky Derbies, having triumphed in 1884, 1890, and 1891. Murphy was the most celebrated jockey of the Gilded Age, winning approximately 44 percent of all his races — a record that stood for nearly a century. His dominance came during an era when Black jockeys were prominent in horse racing, before systematic exclusion pushed them from the sport in the early twentieth century.
