Jacob Lawrence Paints Toussaint L'Ouverture Series

While working under the WPA Harlem Art Workshop, twenty-year-old Jacob Lawrence completed 41 panels on Haitian revolutionary Toussaint L'Ouverture. The series used flat geometric forms and compressed narratives derived from Goya and Daumier to tell a Black liberation history, launching his signature historiographic style.
