James McCune Smith Refutes Pro-Slavery Pseudoscience

Dr. James McCune Smith — first Black American to hold a university medical degree (University of Glasgow, 1837) — wrote statistical refutations of pro-slavery pseudoscience through the 1850s, including a demolition of Census fraud claiming free Black people were more prone to insanity, while running a successful New York medical practice.
