James Weldon Johnson publishes The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man

Johnson's pioneering novel, published anonymously and initially received as a true memoir, explored racial passing and the fragility of racial identity in America with unprecedented sophistication. It is considered a foundational text of the Harlem Renaissance and one of the first modernist novels by a Black American author.
