Jan Ernst Matzeliger patents the shoe lasting machine

Surinamese-born Black inventor Jan Ernst Matzeliger patented a machine that automatically shaped and attached the upper part of a shoe to its sole, a task previously done only by skilled hand labor. His invention cut shoe prices in half, made Lynn, Massachusetts the shoe capital of the world, and is considered one of the most important mechanical inventions of the 19th century.
