Jean-Michel Basquiat becomes a star of the New York art world
By 1982, Jean-Michel Basquiat had risen from a teenage graffiti artist tagging New York subway cars as SAMO to a celebrated gallery artist, becoming at 21 one of the youngest artists ever included in Documenta, the prestigious international art exhibition. His neo-expressionist works combining text, symbols, and figures explored race, identity, and power in America. He became one of the most valuable artists in history; his 1982 painting Untitled sold for $110.5 million in 2017.
