Jelly Roll Morton Spreads New Orleans Jazz Nationally from Chicago

Pianist and composer Ferdinand 'Jelly Roll Morton,' who claimed to have invented jazz, began spreading New Orleans syncopated music to Chicago and beyond around 1915 as part of the broader Black migration northward. His sophisticated compositions and piano style bridged ragtime and jazz, making him one of the first true jazz composers and a central figure in the music's national spread.
