Jesse Jackson founded the National Rainbow Coalition in 1984 while running a historic presidential campaign, winning 3.5 million primary votes and becoming the first Black candidate to mount a serious national campaign for a major-party presidential nomination. The coalition built multiracial political infrastructure that transformed Democratic Party politics and demonstrated the viability of Black presidential candidacy.
