John Mercer Langston Admitted to Ohio Bar
John Mercer Langston became the first Black man admitted to the Ohio bar after graduating from Oberlin College's theology program and reading law privately. He then won election as town clerk of Brownhelm Township, becoming one of the first Black Americans elected to public office. Langston went on to found Howard University's law school and later served in Congress.
