John Singleton Becomes Youngest Best Director Oscar Nominee

At age 24, John Singleton was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for Boyz n the Hood (1991), breaking the record Orson Welles had held for 50 years and becoming the first Black director ever nominated in that category. He was simultaneously nominated for Best Original Screenplay, making him the first person to receive two Oscar nominations for a feature debut.
