Julie Dash's Daughters of the Dust Achieves Theatrical Release

Julie Dash's Daughters of the Dust premiered at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival, winning the Excellence in Cinematography Award, before entering wide theatrical release — making it the first feature film by a Black American woman to receive general theatrical distribution in the United States. Set in the Gullah community in 1902, it was later added to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
