Katherine Dunham Founds Her Dance Company

Choreographer and anthropologist Katherine Dunham established a dance company in Chicago that fused African diasporic movement traditions — from Haiti, Cuba, Brazil, and the American South — with concert dance technique. Her company trained generations of Black dancers and created what became known as the Dunham Technique, transforming American and world dance.
