King Lalibela Commissions Rock-Hewn Churches of Ethiopia

Ethiopian king Lalibela directs construction of eleven monolithic rock-hewn churches in Roha (now Lalibela), each carved downward into red volcanic rock. Bete Giyorgis, the most celebrated, is a perfect cube adorned with cross motifs. These structures remain engineering marvels and active pilgrimage sites to this day.
