Langston Hughes Publishes 'Let America Be America Again'

Hughes's long poem in Esquire catalogued the broken American promise for Black Americans, poor whites, Indigenous peoples, and immigrants with a refrain — 'America never was America to me' — that captured the paradox of patriotism under exclusion.
