Lewis Howard Latimer Patents Improved Carbon Filament for Light Bulbs

Lewis Howard Latimer, son of escaped slaves, patented a method for manufacturing carbon filaments for incandescent bulbs in 1881, solving the durability problem that made electric light commercially viable. He worked with both Edison and Maxim, drafted the patent drawings for Alexander Graham Bell's telephone, and authored the first textbook on electric lighting.
