Lewis Howard Latimer Patents Improved Carbon Filament for the Light Bulb
Lewis Howard Latimer, son of escaped slaves, patents a durable carbon filament (U.S. Patent 252,386) that makes electric light bulbs commercially viable and long-lasting. Having earlier drafted Alexander Graham Bell's telephone patent drawings, Latimer joined Edison's team and supervised installation of electric lighting in New York, Philadelphia, London, and Montreal.
