Black Business District Thrives in Lynchburg, Virginia

By the 1890s, Lynchburg, Virginia's Court Street corridor had developed into one of the South's most prosperous Black business districts, with Black-owned insurance companies, pharmacies, hotels, and newspapers. It exemplified the parallel economy Black entrepreneurs built under segregation, funding churches, schools, and civic organizations.
