Sarah Breedlove — later Madam C.J. Walker — began experimenting with hair care formulas in the late 1890s after suffering hair loss. By the early 1900s she had developed a successful product line sold door-to-door, building the foundation for a company that made her the first self-made female millionaire in American history.
