Marshall 'Major' Taylor wins world cycling championship

Marshall 'Major' Taylor became the world sprint cycling champion in 1899 and the second Black world champion in any sport, competing in the face of intense racial hostility in both the United States and Europe. Taylor's story of athletic excellence against institutionalized racism prefigured the civil rights struggles of the twentieth century.
