Mary Church Terrell Elected Inaugural President of NACW

Mary Church Terrell was elected the first president of the National Association of Colored Women (NACW) in 1896, the largest Black women's organization in the country. The NACW united hundreds of local clubs to advocate for civil rights, anti-lynching legislation, suffrage, and social welfare — operating under the motto 'Lifting as We Climb.'
