Meharry Medical College Founded

Meharry Medical College was founded in Nashville in 1876 by the Freedmen's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church, largely funded by Samuel Meharry. It became the first medical school in the South open to Black students and has trained more than 40 percent of all Black physicians and dentists in U.S. history.
