A. Philip Randolph and Chandler Owen Found The Messenger Magazine

A. Philip Randolph and Chandler Owen founded The Messenger, a radical socialist magazine that the US Justice Department called 'the most dangerous of all the Negro publications.' The magazine advocated labor organizing, opposed World War I conscription of Black men denied equal citizenship, and advanced Black working-class politics at a time when mainstream Black publications shied away from such positions.
