Meta Warrick Fuller Creates 'Ethiopia Awakening' Sculpture

Sculptor Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller created 'Ethiopia Awakening,' a bronze sculpture depicting a Black woman emerging from mummy wrappings into consciousness — widely considered a foundational work of the Harlem Renaissance aesthetic years before the Renaissance was named. Fuller was one of the first African American artists to incorporate African themes into her work, directly influencing later generations.
