Michael Jordan becomes first Black majority owner of a major American sports franchise

On March 17, 2010, Michael Jordan purchased a majority stake in the Charlotte Bobcats (later the Hornets), becoming the first Black majority owner of a major professional sports franchise in American history. The landmark transaction in a league that had been owned almost exclusively by white billionaires opened a new chapter for Black ownership at the highest levels of American sport.
