Black and Moorish Men Join Early Spanish Colonial Expeditions

Dozens of Black and Moorish men participate in early Spanish expeditions to the Americas between 1500 and 1530, including the Balboa expedition that first sighted the Pacific Ocean in 1513. Many, like Juan Garrido, were free men who enlisted voluntarily. Their labor, navigation skills, and language abilities were essential to early Spanish exploration of the New World.
